Long Run

It was nice and cool.  Good enough reason for a nice easy run.  Looking forward to the best part of living in Houston.  The winter months!  Quads were a little stiff from yesterday's 5K but worked it self out by the 3rd mile.

Fat and slow.  178 lbs?  I keep going the wrong way.  Weather on the other hand was perfect!  Plus I won a pair of Asics socks to boot!  It was time to get some speed work done so what better than a nice 5K race around Alden Bridge?  I seem to have lost about a minute during the summer heat.  Ran out of gas during the last half mile.

Nice way to unwind after a long day at the office and long commute home.  Apparently, everybody wanted to take advantage of free toll on Hardy this afternoon.

Another sub 9 pace.  The thing about streak running for me is that I get faster.  After a tiring hump yesterday, rather than feeling totally sluggish, I felt light and energentic.  Unfortunately, I'll break something if I keep it up.  So, tomorrow will be a rest day followed by RTW 5K race on Saturday.

Calm Before IKE

Went out for a quick run around the neighborhood. Everything looked very normal and calm. Other than having a feel of an early Saturday morning, things looked pretty OK in my neighborhood. The only reminder of impending storm was one house that boarded up their windows, albeit only on the first floor. It's a strange feeling, knowing that everything is normal now, yet by the day's end, should the storm track not change, there will be howling winds battering my neighborhood.

Ike has already changed my weekend plans. This Sunday is Korean Thanksgiving. I was scheduled to fly up to Chicago on Saturday afternoon except, Southwest, bless their hearts called me last night to tell me that my flight is cancelled and I need to re-book. So much for hanging out with Mom this weekend... I'm sure Dad understands.

Ghost Runner and Me

I came across this while rummaging through my pics this afternoon.  This is 2008 TIR, somewhere in Southeast TX.  It must be day one 'cause we're still smiling - genuinely.

Carbo Gain - 100% Complex Carbohydrates

I was killing time at our local HEB store the other day and came across this product.  I'm not sure what maltodextrin does for long runs but here is my synopsis from this morning's 13 miler.  I put half a cups worth into my Amphipod and drank it during the first half of the run (at which point I had to re-fill the Amphipod with playground water dispenser) and here is what I have learnt.

1.  It doesn't give me diarrhea which is always a good thing.
2.  It has a mild pasty taste but was not bothersome.
3.  I had a bloated stomach feel which wasn't bothering the run but it was "there."
4.  I finished the run feeling good but that could have been attributed to good weather.

Has anyone else used this product?

A Little Running Here and There

Another 4 plus miles on the Lake Woodlands Drive on Friday and a nice long one this morning rounds out my weekend running. First weekend of September and the temps are feeling decidedly cooler, at least in the mornings.

Today's run reminded why I love running.

While running on Chochran's crossing, I ran alongside 5 does. In the semi darkness, the straggler doe stopped and turned around to see what lumpy and ungraceful specie was running besides them. Then one by one, they all stopped and turned to sate their curiosity to see me trundle by. I was just hoping that a big antlered stag wasn't near by. I'd hate to be chased by one of those. Amazing how they don't make much noise bounding about.

In the wee hours of the night, every time I took a swig from my green Amphipod, I tilted my head towards the heavens and was greeted by a beautiful star studded black sky. Then watching the night turn to day somehow gives me a sense of renewed hope for anything that comes across my mind.

Lake Woodlands Drive is my second most favorite running course. Starting from the Y and running to the Northshore Park and back. I only run this when son Alex is taking Tae Kwon Do class at the Y. So it's always between 6:30 and 7:30 PM. Thank goodness for restrooms at the park.

I think the temp was in the low 80's but more importantly, the humidity was in the low 50's. That is supposed to be a thresh hold level where the sweat actually evaporates off your skin to keep your body cool. That was fine but the sun was beating down relentlessly. By the start of fourth mile, I was kaput with overheating. Otherwise, a pretty nice pacing.
